Why Elementary Counselors?

The elementary school years set the foundation for developing the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary for children to become healthy, competent and confident learners. Elementary school counselors have an impact on these years by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program and collaborating with school staff, parents and the community to create a safe and respectful learning environment. By providing education, prevention, early identification and intervention, elementary school counselors help their students achieve academic success, develop an understanding of career opportunities and develop social/emotional skills in response to issues they face.

Classroom Guidance

Classroom guidance lessons are delivered to all students twice per month and meet the specific needs of that grade level.  Common lessons are on kindness to self and kindness to others.  Other topics have included; conflict resolution, bullying, personal space, team-building, and cooperation.

Individual Counseling

Individual counseling is on a solution-focused, short-term basis.  Students who may need additional ongoing services can be referred to outside providers.  Needs addressed through individual counseling can be academic or personal/social.

Group Counseling

Groups that can be formed include those focused on social skills development, friendship skills, study skills, emotional regulation, or changing family situations.  Students are chosen through a recommendation process and participation in small groups are entirely voluntary.

Consultation and Collaboration

School counselors are considered vital members of the educational team and often consult and collaborate with staff and parents/guardians to best address each individual students needs to be successful.
